Where to Apply Foam Insulation in the Attic

Where to Apply Foam Insulation in the Attic

When your energy bills have started to strain your pocket and you are contemplating on putting on foam insulation, you first need to check whether or not you have attic ventilation. Foam insulation will help seal off all those cracks that invite moisture into your home and make your heating and cooling devices work harder. While this type of insulation is indeed a homeowner’s ally, you have determine first where to apply it to protect your home best.

Starting with the way your home is constructed, you can determine if your attic relies on the stack effect to get the air moving by the vents installed there. When you have this feature, the foam insulation can be sprayed on your attic floor so you can keep the cool temperature within the rooms beneath it and prevent the air conditioning unit in your home from overworking itself in the brutal summer months. If your attic is not ventilated, then you must spray the foam insulation right on the attic’s ceiling. The goal is to entirely close off the attic so your home will not anymore be at the mercy of extreme weather changes.

An Electric Snow Thrower Is An Excellent Choice For Fast And Easy Snow Removal

An Electric Snow Thrower Is An Excellent Choice For Fast And Easy Snow Removal

An Electric Snow Thrower Is An Excellent Choice For Fast And Easy Snow Removal

The construction and design of snow blowers has been mostly the same over the years. Manufacturers have made innovations in ergonomics and starters, but the introduction of the electric snow blower has probably been the best improvement.

The electric snow blower has a number of important advantages over gas-powered snow throwers.

  1. Handling is easier since the electric snow thrower is significantly lighter
  2. They run on electricity
  3. You never have to worry about running out of gas
  4. There’s no oil changes
  5. Electric snow throwers start with just push of a button
  6. They don’t make as much noise
  7. The purchase price is much less
  8. Storage is easier and they take up less space
  9. No end-of-season engine drains

However, electric snow blowers are not without their faults or limitations compared to the larger and more powerful gas-powered machines:

  1. Electric snow blower can only handle up to about 10” of dry snow.
  2. You can’t go long distances because of the limitation of the length of the electric cord.
  3. You have to get used to working with the electric cord so it doesn’t get in the way.
  4. The electric cord must be designed for very cold temperatures.
  5. Cannot be used on gravel.
  6. Must be used on smooth surfaces. no self-propel.

If you live in an area of moderate snowfalls up to 10”, then an electric snow thrower is an excellent purchase. If you have deeper snowfalls, they can be handled, but will require additional passes.

If you live in a city that has snow plows, you will have to break up the compacted snow and ice that piles up at the end of your driveway .The electric snow thrower is not going to be powerful enough to handle compacted snow and ice. Hopefully, you won’t have to do this very often.

Deck and patios can be difficult to manage with gas-powered machine. It can be difficult to maneuver and the additional weight can be a back-breaker.

This is where the electric snow thrower has the advantage because of its lighter weight. It can be easily lifted onto patios and decks. Electric snow throwers have minimum maintenance.

Gas powered machines need to have oil and gas, tune-ups, end of season treatment, and can occasionally be difficult to start. All you have to do with an electric snowthrower is plug it in and start throwing snow.

At first, you might think that the electric cord will be a problem, but it really isn’t. If you can handle a house vacuum cleaner, then you can adapt to the electric cord.

If you’re tired of shoveling snow have been putting off making the leap to buy a snowblower, then consider the electric. They don’t cost a whole lot, they are light and easy to use, and they are surprisingly powerful.

Spring Home Maintenance and Renovation Tips

Spring Home Maintenance and Renovation Tips

Spring Home Maintenance and Renovation Tips

Many of us take off for warmer climes in March, and most of us take too many clothes. With luggage restrictions on most airlines, it makes sense to take some care and pack only what you need. Follow these tips and you’ll also save yourself time, hassle and ironing:

* Plan ahead. Make a list and jot down the outfits you anticipate you’ll need. Plan on wearing an outfit more than once when possible and eliminate anything that’s not essential.

* If you are heading on a cruise, see if the ship has a tuxedo rental service – it will save you packing extra for the formal nights.

* Choose one or two complimentary colour schemes and stick to them. This gives you mix and match flexibility and the bonus of selecting accessories, such as jewelry and purses, that can do double and even triple duty!

* Now you can set about packing your well-planned wardrobe. Start with the heavy items, such as shoes and purses, on the bottom of the suitcase. Fill the corners with “scrunchables”, such as underwear and socks. Place belts around the inside edge of the suitcase.
* Layer pants, dresses and long items over the bulkier items on the bottom. Layer easily creased garments between others to give them some cushioning and cut down on wrinkles.

* Jackets go in last, and should be folded inside out with the collar turned up and then folded in half with the shoulders touching.

* Unpack as soon as you arrive. Try hanging wrinkled garments in the bathroom with the shower running to steam out wrinkles. If there is no iron already in the room, most hotels will supply an iron and ironing board on request.

As winter delivers its last icy blast this month, turn your thoughts to the sunny days ahead. Planning your garden and spring renovations are lovely ways to pass the long winter nights, and get a jump on things when the spring days arrive.

* If your view of the outside world is a little dreary, it could be time to replace those dated, inefficient windows. March is the ideal time to call for quotes on energy-efficient replacement windows. It is one project that transforms your home inside and out, while brightening your view of the world. Ask about the Club’s March window replacement special.

* Keep an eye on eavestroughs for hanging icicles, which could indicate eaves blockages causing ice damming and roof damage. As the weather warms, look for leaking eaves during rainstorms. If you spotted either icicles or leaks, have a roofing specialists inspect your roofing system in the spring and have repairs made.

* Beat the spring rush by planning your outdoor project now and calling for quotes before the contractors’ calendars start filling up. The sooner you get things underway in the spring, the more time you will have to lounge on your new deck/patio this summer!

* Get a head start on spring cleaning by decluttering this month. Go room by room, cupboard by cupboard and then drawer by drawer. Get rid of unwanted furniture and household items by donating them to charity. Have closet organizers installed to keep things neat and tidy.

* Once the clutter is gone, start cleaning! Again, tackle a room at a time; wash walls, turn mattresses, wash blinds and window coverings, clean upholstery and have carpets shampooed.

* Take a look at the trees and your property, watching for signs of decay and disease, and dead or split branches. March is the time to book appointments for tree removal and pruning. The trees are still dormant and prices are low. Ask about the Club’s March Tree Pruning special.

* Take in lawnmowers and other garden tools for tuning and repair this month so they are ready to go when the warm weather arrives.

Avoid Structural Damage with Roofing Repair Services

Avoid Structural Damage with Roofing Repair Services

Avoid Structural Damage with Roofing Repair Services

Maintaining a residential house or a commercial structure is a tedious task. Many home and business owners have experienced or will have to contend with, costly structural damage to their building at one time or another. One of the primary areas of concern for structural damage is often the roof. This is because it is a difficult area to monitor due to its location and because the roof is consistently exposed to nature’s elements (ice damming on roofs is a common problem in Canada). This is where reliable roofing repair services can be of great benefit. With regular roof maintenance and repairs, you can minimize the chance of costly structural damage to your residential or commercial roof.

An important aspect of good property maintenance and management is regular inspection of the roof by a reliable roofing repair service provider. Commercial and residential buildings with flat or sloped roofs are all prone to serious roof damage and degradation. Maintaining a commercial or residential roof can be done on a “do-it-yourself-basis” however it is not advisable, This is because specialized knowledge is required, roof work is dangerous, it would require investing in roofing supplies and equipment and because the price to pay for doing it wrong is just too steep. We suggest you pay attention to the warning signs of roof problems and contract a reliable roof repair company in your area.

There are many circumstances where it’s advisable to contact a roofing repair company to have your roof inspected for damage; if your roof is 10 years or older, if it is showing signs of blistered or has stained interior walls or ceilings, if the flashings is torn, if there are missing or torn shingles, if there is peeling paint or water-stained brick where the walls meet the roof, sagging eavestroughs, damaged fascia or soffits (fascia are the planks to which gutters are attached, and soffits are ventilated covers that extend from the fascia to the house). A professional roof repair company will identify the problems areas, suggest corrective measures, whether it be a roof repair or roof replacement and recommend preventative measures to avoid future roofing problems.

In some cases roof repair work or a roof replacement is processed through an insurance claim. Before contacting your local roofing expert, you should ensure that you have the necessary insurance paperwork for your protection and don’t hesitate to request a report on the condition of your roof if it’s needed.

Preventing roof damage is always preferable to paying for expensive repairs and this can be achieved by contracting a roofing repair or roof replacement expert who can apply quality roofing products, siding, eaves and windows that can withstand Ontario’s harsh climate. It’s impossible to avoid roofing wear and damage altogether, but with the help of the services offered by an expert, you will be able to extend the life of your roof and avoid any major structural roofing damage and financial hardship.
